Organic Mattresses are Durable!

Buying a mattress is one thing but the big worry is investing in a mattress that wont last. The key material in natural organic mattress is durable, long lasting natural rubber. This component alone is the longest lasting material used in mattresses today. With many benefits from superior pressure relief to sleeping cooler. There is no material like it on the market. The latex material is up to 30% more pressure relieving than conventional foam mattresses. Organic mattresses often come with the best warranty and is know to last longer than 15 years. Some organic mattresses have been know to last 25 years. Most organic mattresses only require a ¾” body impression to be considered defective while normal mattresses require a 1 ½” body impression. This speaks volumes about the quality of the mattress.

Health Benefits of Natural Organic Mattress

Free of Petroleum foams means no toxic off gassing consumed by your body. Mattresses off gas. What does that mean? It’s when a mattress may give off an odor, which may not even be detectable by smelling it. It’s caused by the chemical breakdown of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you can’t afford an organic mattress, the only real way to be able to stop the toxic off gassing is covering your mattress with a polyethylene encasement. "Regardless of what you’ll see on some websites, it’s impossible for anything to be “truly chemical-free” or “100% nontoxic” – even the purest untouched wilderness landscape contains some chemical traces, and pure spring water can be toxic in high-enough doses." Source Organic-Pedic

Non Toxic Mattress Fire Barrier
Mattresses by law require a fire barrier. Of course the human race always find an alternative to a natural option. Most mattresses are manufactured using synthetic materials and chemicals. The most widely known and used chemical is Boric acid. Boric acid is a known insecticide. Always ask the complete details about a mattress fire barrier in the mattress you are considering.

As stated by Walter Bader in his book, Sleep Safe in Toxic World, “Ingesting large amounts of boron over short periods of time can harm the stomach, intestine, liver, kidney and brain. Animal studies of ingestion of boron effects on the testes in male animals. Birth defects were also seen in the offspring of female animals exposed during pregnancy. We don’t know what the effects are in people from skin contact with boron. Animal studies have found skin irritation when boron was applied directly to the skin.”

Pressure Relief
Organic natural mattresses are not just safer to sleep on, they are known to give the best comfort available. Latex is the key ingredient in an organic mattress and is known to be 30% more pressure relieving than leading foams that contain VOCs.

Hypo Allergenic
-Dust might resistant
-Mold and mildew resistant
-Antibacterial and antifungal

This all combined could help with allergies, wheezing, asthma and many more.

Organic Mattresses, Sleep Healthy

We all know that the body must endure on average, roughly 8 hours of sleep a night. Upon dealing with the contact of the body onto a mattress that could potentially have harsh chemicals in its foundation, could pose great risk in the future. 8 hours is quite a long time each and every night for the body to endure the amount of chemicals that some mattresses may in fact possess. Over time, the absorption of these chemicals can build up within the body, doing more harm than good in the future.

In today’s marketplace, there is a plethora of choices that one can make on their mattress. With all different shapes, sizes, brands, colors, feelings, materials, it’s hard for one to really grasp the idea of what it is they’re buying. Amongst the many choices, buying organic products such as foods and even mattresses is not a hobby, its a movement that many are turning to in order to ensure a better foundation for their lives. Organic cotton bedding is becoming increasingly popular because it is more environmentally safe and healthier than non-organic or synthetic bedding. Organic cotton is pesticide free, pigment free, and hypoallergenic. Organic cotton is extremely comfortable and soothing because it absorbs moisture and wicks it away from the body, keeping the sleeper dry during the night. Organic cotton is not only sustainable and biodegradable, but it is also extremely durable and convenient.

In recent decades, most mattresses have been made either with metal springs sandwiched between layers of polyurethane foam, or with just foam. In showrooms, salespeople typically focus on firmness, talking about the number of springs or the density of the foam. What they rarely bring up — but what has become increasingly common knowledge among consumers — is that polyurethane foam is made from petroleum, and that it can emit volatile organic compounds (V.O.C.’s), which have been linked to respiratory irritation and other health problems, according to both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Chemical sensitivity is quite a real thing that many people don’t take into consideration. There are countless forms of chemicals found within a vast amount of the products that are used in our daily lives, yet most individuals today don’t quite grasp the understanding. We talked before about some of the benefits of an organic mattress, primarily the benefits of an organic mattress containing the three components that typically make up an organic mattress, latex, cotton and wool. The fact of the matter is that the average human today will spend a third of their lifetime in bed. That’s quite a long time, so might as well make the best of your mattress. To elaborate on some of the benefits that make up our organic mattresses, while both organic latex, cotton and wool are three different components, they do share similar qualities amongst one another, such as they are both hypo-allergenic, durable, sustainable, temperature regulated/controlled, and of course they are infant approved, which for most families is huge when considering the right mattress to select.

While no material is 100% perfect, you can be sure to get close to perfection with these options. This is more so true with cotton than wool, as cotton contains less harming qualities than wool does. However, both are good enough to ensure you a top quality choice in your mattress, and in going organic in the process.

As previously mentioned, the main things to think about when going organic are simply three qualities that all show know when buying an organic mattress. As defined, an organic mattress is one that is free of synthetic materials, has not been treated with chemicals, and complies with organic standards. The formula overall is quite a simple concept to grasp. Whether one considers going with an organic mattress, or one considers sticking with their traditional/conventional mattress, the choice is ultimately up to you.

Today, there are so many options available for one to choose from, which is fantastic. It may be daunting and overwhelming to some, but in the end, it will give you the consumer more to work with in terms of doing some homework to see which mattress in fact is the right one for you. An organic mattress won’t be right for everyone. While it is becoming a recommended choice for many to take part in trying out an organic mattress, not everyone will be in line to take the plunge and go organic. However, with many other options available for consumers to lay their heads on, there are plenty of other good options that are available, and that are taking the world by storm in their own right such as natural mattresses by Posh & Lavish.

With so many people today being conscious of their health, organic mattresses are right there in the same line of taking the world by storm in their own right. Because the standards are set so high for only the purest form of materials to be enclosed in our mattresses today, it puts forth a new perspective in people’s minds to think about which mattress they really do want to have in their lives. For many out there who deal with various issues in their life such as allergies and chemical imbalance upon contact, organic has become a way to go simply because of the fact that an organic mattress is as pure as it gets, just like the foods you eat that are certified and classified as being organic. Whatever your choice is, the foundation you build in your life will go a long way as a result of the foundation built within your mattress. It’s just a matter of what you want that foundation to consist of.

Beware of Mattress Green Washing
If you are in the market for a 100% certified Organic mattress there is no argument that Organic-Pedic mattresses is the best choice for you. They even guarantee that their mattresses are the purest and safest mattresses available or you will get their mattress free. They are the true leaders in the Organic mattress industries. Many companies make false claims about having clean or organic mattresses. Many believe what they are told that the bamboo fabric is organic, Soy foam is natural witch is petroleum foam with a nice name and could off gas VOC’s in to the air. Organic-pedic even has certification for some of their mattress that are certified organic as a finished product not just the mattress components it self.

Many retailers and online retailers are simply making false claims. There are many claims that mattresses company’s and even sales associates on retail showroom floors are making false such as being “nontoxic,” “chemical-free,” “organic,” or “hypoallergenic.” Of course we all know being chemical free is impossible. But in order to make these claims you need have certification to back up those claims always ask for the certification to back up anyone’s claim.

How do you know that what you're hearing is true?

Simply ask to see the law label. Law label don’t lie. The manufacturer can't manipulate the law label. The law label describes the contents of the mattress. This is a great tool to see if you are being told the truth about what is inside the bed. You will know if it’s a natural bed or if it is just a bed that looks like it’s a natural bed made. If you see words like fiber, fiber bathing or Visoc foamor Soy foam. It is simply not a natural bed.

If it says Organic cotton or Bamboo on the cover of the mattress it does not mean it is natural or organic and could only be talking about the contents of the fabric and not the entire bed. Make sure to ask for all the certifications regarding the particular mattress you are looking at.

What’s an Organic Mattress?

With so many people today being health conscious and worrying about what they surround themselves with or the foods they eat; it seems everyone knows well enough and has heard about organic food. Foods that are as natural as it gets when it comes to how it is produced, and how it goes from the field to your table without any preservatives or unnecessary hormones that can create damaging results for your body down the road.

While many people are familiar with this realm of organic, there are those out there that may not know that the same can be applied to your mattress as well. Yes, an organic mattress. It’s a real thing that can prove to do wonders for you, your body, and your family for a great and healthy nights rest. Like anything produced today, natural elements from the earth is used to create our everyday materials, including our mattress.

Considering an Organic Mattress?

When considering an organic mattress, there are three components that typically make an organic mattress. These consist of cotton, wool and latex. Amongst the three, your best bet for the purest form of organic would be to consider an organic cotton cover for your mattress. Reason being is that organic cotton is grown without synthetic chemicals like fertilizers or pesticides, and is not genetically modified in any way. In addition, it’s healthier for you, as residue from chemicals used in organic cotton agriculture can be taken into the body through the skin. Unbleached organic cotton is even better as it ensures no harsh bleaches have been used on the cotton. This is great for all those searching for a pure and clean mattress for themselves and/or their loved ones. Enduring less and less harsh chemicals is a top priority for most families, especially those with young children.

Wool Mattress Fire Barrier

Wool is the best and healthiest fire barrier available. It allows for a comforting night’s sleep just as cotton does. However, having a wool mattress has its pros and cons. Some of the pros and benefits that one can find in wool is that wool is good at wicking away moisture and helping you keep cool. How does it do this? It contains a natural wax called lanolin. It’s a greasy yellow wax produced by sheep, which keeps their hairs dry and soft through harsh weather. The best option would be a vegan mattress from Organic-Pedic.

Organic Latex

Natural latex is a component you’ll typically find in almost all organic mattresses. Most latex mattresses on the market are not organic because they're not certified organic. To label anything organic it must be certified. Control Union is the only company certifying latex as organic under the Global Organic Latex Standards (GOLS). In order for a mattress to be certified as organic, 95% of its latex should be made from certified organic components.

Organic Bedding Advantage

When one thinks of organic, they think of the purest form of the product possible, whatever that product may be. For one’s mattress, the same is true as well. In order for a mattress to be considered organic, it must be certified organic by an organization which certifies products to be organic, a third party organic certifying agent. The idea of being eco-friendly is one that many people hold dear to. Having an organic mattress gives one the peace of mind knowing that just like their food that is certified organic at the highest regard, their mattress is produced with organic materials that allow for great benefits. Certified by the “Global Organic Textile Standard,” a mattress is not organic unless it has the seal of approval to call itself organic.

Organic products offer many advantages and benefits. If you have problems with allergies, purchasing organic goods is a wise option. They do not contain chemicals and therefore are less likely to irritate your nasal passages or skin. Since they do not contain harmful pollutants, they are better for the environment. Rather than do harm, they help maintain the soil. They also help to preserve the Earth as well as our health and wellbeing.

Once you understand the answer to the question, "What does organic mean?" you will be able to recognize more organic products in stores and on the Internet. You may decide to switch to organic goods in order to help out the environment and improve your health.

There are different quality wools, latex and organic cotton covers. This is why there is a wide range of prices for organic and natural mattresses. This is what leads to the confusion of buying an organic mattress. The drastic price difference can leave someone scratching his or her head. How does a company get away with the same thickness of a mattress being so much less than another on the market? First, the manufacturer will choose lesser quality materials such as lower density latex, which not as consistent but still at the same thickness, of a better quality component available. That's why we feel it is so important to visit in store when buying your next mattress. In a store, you can feel the latex rubber samples in your hand and see how manufacturers manipulate the latex.

Chemical Alert: A regular mattress could contain some scary stuff.

What Components are used to make organic mattress?

Latex Rubber

The most popular material used in organic mattresses today is natural rubber. The natural rubber is from organically grown rubber trees near the equator. The trees produce a natural healthy clean rubber sap that can either go through the Dunlop latex process or the Talalay latex process. Latex mattresses have been known to last 20 plus years. Natural rubber is buoyant and pressure relieving, these layers will give you the support and comfort for your mattress.

Natural Latex Rubber:

  • Talalay Latex- provides comfort and pressure relieving layers for the best muscle relaxation effects
  • Dunlop Latex- supportive core, for the best support and lowest motion transfer effect
  • Breathable- Heat does not build up in latex. Air moves freely through and every time you move in latex all the air in the mattress is refreshed
  • Most durable component in the bedding industry
  • It’s rubber from the rubber tree

What makes Latex such a unique material is that it is technically a rubber, not a foam. In fact, when Latex beds were a significant share of the market, they had brands that you would recognize only because they are names of rubber tires today. Goodyear, for example or Pirelli Latex Mattresses were common in Europe until recently.

As history goes, the very first use of rubber was to make Latex in 1600BC. Of course, it didn’t make it to bedding until the 1920s. Many of the benefits of Latex are a result of the fact that it is simply rubber. Durability being most significant and better than foam. Think of products you know that are made from rubber. How different would they be if they were made from foam. How resilient would tires be if they were made out of foam? How resilient would your sneaker tread be if they were made out of foam? How resilient would a racket ball be if they were made out of foam?

Technically, here is what makes rubber different than foam.

  • Rubber materials share elastic behaviors not found in polyurethane foam.
  • Rubber are polymers having unique properties of elongation and elastic recovery after vulcanization. The key is thermosetting.

Rubber material, unlike poly, has the ability to be stretched significantly without breaking and to retract to its original shape and size. This unique stretching behavior of rubber has everything to do with the molecules and the bonds that make it up. When stretched, these bonds uncoil. When the strain is relieved, they recoil. This gives rubber elastic qualities, which makes it resilient. When vulcanized, natural rubber double bonds become single bonds and are flexible and coil around each other. Natural Latex Rubber has a stereo regular configuration-molecules repeat to form the chain- which is why it has high strength upon elongation.

Organic Wool

Organic wool is the cleanest option verse conventional fire retardant barriers commonly used in mattresses today. Organic natural wool is a natural fire retardant.

The Sheep are raised in New Zealand. The wool is certified organic through Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which have requirements that the sheep are not treated poorly and are humanely raised without chemicals, including the pasture that they graze on. Also, this makes sure there are no harmful sheering processes.

In order to sanitize the wool, it has been rinsed with organic natural soap, cleansed and sun dried. This gets rid of any potential mold, mildew or other contaminants. The wool is washed with a vegetable based organic soap by the vendor as a regular practice.

Organic Wool:

  • Natural/Fire Retardant Chemical-FREE Barrier
  • Natures ‘Miracle’ fiber
  • Breathable, wick moisture, and regulates temperature

Organic Wool pulls excess heat and moisture away from the body to give the perfect resting environment, storing heat and moisture inside the fiber. Wool will release stored heat and moisture to the sleeper if body surface temperature drops too low.

Organic Cotton

Organic unbleached cotton mainly used in the cover of the mattress. Being organic this means it has not been treated with the harsh bleaching chemicals and is still closet to its most natural state. Organic Cotton is also free of pesticides and uses less water to grow.

Horse Hair

Horsehair is naturally breathable due to its hollow tubes. It’s the ultimate in luxury and used in only in the best and well-known luxury mattress brands. When buying a natural mattress with horsehair, make sure that the horses are not harmed in any way and only source the hair from the mane and tail. Fun fact: Horsehair is used for the strings of a violin.
